SFPet Academy Course Challenges – Bivalves
IMB Bivalves
November 1st 2024 – January 31st 2025
This quarter we will be featuring four (4) new courses.
Introducing Bivalves, those fascinating creatures of the aquatic world, deserve a moment in the spotlight. These soft-bodied mollusks are characterized by their hinged, two-part shells, which they use to protect themselves from predators and the ever-shifting tides. Imagine a clam or a mussel—the quintessential bivalves—buried in the sandy substrate, filtering water through their gills to extract nutrients. They’re like nature’s tiny water purifiers, diligently sifting out particles and plankton.
But don’t let their seemingly simple lifestyle fool you; bivalves play a crucial role in marine ecosystems. They help maintain water quality, provide habitat for other organisms, and even serve as a tasty treat for seafood enthusiasts. So, whether you’re a marine biologist or just someone who appreciates the quiet elegance of these shell-bound creatures, let’s dive into the world of bivalves and celebrate their understated charm!
